Pentaho Announces Mondrian 2.4

New Release Provides Enhanced Analytics and Improved Support for Large Databases
Orlando, FL. - Sept. 5, 2007 - Pentaho Corp., creator of the world's most popular open source Business Intelligence (BI) suite, today announced Mondrian 2.4, the latest release of Pentaho's popular Mondrian OLAP project. The new release provides additional analytical capabilities along with advanced SQL enhancements to optimize query performance against very large databases.

Mondrian 2.4 provides the ability to intelligently aggregate distinct-count measures. As an example of the business application of this capability, consider someone trying to analyze the number of customers their company had sold to over a six-month time period. Adding the number of customers for the individual months would lead to an inaccurate result, because a given customer could easily appear in several different months. Mondrian 2.4's new capabilities make it easy to identify and analyze distinct-count measures such as these.

Mondrian has been deployed for production applications analyzing more than half a terabyte of data in a multi-server, clustered environment. As data volumes grow, it's critical for OLAP applications to exploit the performance and scalability features of the underlying database platform. Mondrian 2.4 now supports the GROUPING SETS SQL construct, to improve performance and reduce the number of individual SQL queries required to satisfy an analytical request. This SQL construct is widely supported in popular commercial database platforms, including IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Teradata.

Mondrian 2.4 also supports additional Multi-Dimensional Expression (MDX) functions, improved support for the industry-standard XML for Analysis (XMLA) web-services protocol, and integration with the Apache Virtual File System (VFS).
